New clients

  1. Will there be banners or pop-ups on my site?
Absolutely not, you pay for the webspace, so you control what can be seen on your site.

Up

  2. Will the domain name remain my property, even if i want to move it?
The domain name is your legal property. It is registered to your name, so you can move it at all
times as you please. Until recently, only companies that were registered at the chamber of
commerce could register a domain name. This rule has now been canceled so private individuals can also claim a domain name.

Up

  3. What will happen if I cross the allowed datalimit?
Once you systematically use more data traffic than allowed, we will contact you
to find a solution, you will not receive a bill unanounced.

Up

  4. Can I pay per month?
No, that is not possible. You can only pay per year. The costs we would have to make to collect a few Euros per month from each client would make our services considerably more expensive.
This very principle is one of the reasons we can work this cheaply.

Up

  5. How should I pay?
.nl ; .be ; .de ; .com etc. domains are payed in advance, by bank transfer. Needless to say, as a
private or individual you will receive an invoice at home.

Up

  6. How long will it take before my site becomes active?
Your site is registered the same day we receive the necessary papers/payment. You receive your
login data the same day per email, as well as the information about your account. After registration/moving, it will take a minimum of 24 hours before your site will be accessible. This has
to do with the DNS data that have to be copied by the Internet. We do not influence this (no provider in the world can), but at a new application, the site will generally be fully active within 2 days.

Up

  7. I want ...@mydomain as e-mail address, is that possible?
You can receive all email targeted to your domain, no matter what it says before the @ sign.

Up

  8. What is the guaranteed server uptime?
Downtime at webservers outside of the normal maintenance is virtually never occurring. But if you
want, we give a guarantee of 99,9 % uptime

Up

  9. I phone in through..... can I upload/edit my site?
You can reach your site/email through every internet connection. No matter whether it is an analogue or cable/DSL/ADSL link.

Up

  10. And if i cross my data traffic limit?
You are responsible for the used number of GB's per month. However, we also monitor this.
If you cross your limit we will contact you to look for a suitable solution (buy extra datatraffic or upgrade to a heavier package). Your site will not be placed offline and generally you will not receive any unexpected bills from us.
We will always, in all fairness, see what is best for you. If you use more than allowed in one month, you will not hear from us. Only if the crossing is structural, we will contact you.

Up

  11. Can I also request a customized hosting package?
Of course this is possible, two ways:
    1. If your desired package is not too different from our packages, you can just select the extra
options at the package that comes closest to your package.
    2. If you have very different wishes from our standard packages, then send an email to our sales department.

Up

          Domain information

  1. Can I also receive hosting without requesting/moving a domain name?
Keeping your current domain is also possible, you give us the email from your registrar and
the language in which we must communicate with your registrar. we will then arrange everything for you.

Up

  2. Are there any start-up costs for moving/requesting a domain name?
No we don't charge start-up costs for registering or moving your domain.
    Which domain should I choose?

Up

  3. Can I see whether a domain name is still available?
Yes, you can do that here on our site.

Up

  4. Which domain should I choose?
You are free to choose which extension you want to register. If you want to publish a website that
is targeted towards a Dutch public, it is advisable to choose the extension .nl, because most Dutch people will choose a domain name with .nl. Of course, it can happen that your desired domain name
in a certain extension is already taken, in that case you may choose another extension.

Up

  5. Can I also apply for a domain as a private individual?
Yes, nowadays it is also possible for private individuals to apply for a domain name. You can
apply for every domain, even .nl; .be ; .de ; etc domains.

Up

  6. Who will be the domain owner?
With domain registration, there is no reference of an owner, but rather of a keeper of a
domain. As client you are registered as keeper of the domain that you have requested. As a user,
you have all the rights of the domain, provided that none of our conditions are violated.

Up

  7. Can I make my domain forward?
    Yes this is possible.

Up

  8. Can I register more than 1 domain?
This is possible, if you want to apply for extra domains make a note of this a the remarks section
    on your application form.

Up

  9. I already have a domain, can I tune it to your nameservers?
Of course, this is possible. Our nameservers can be found under "hostinfo" possible to
    setup here.

Up

          Uploading
  1. When can I upload my site?
You can upload your site when it becomes accessible on our servers. Generally there will be a notification: this domain has been reserverd for a client of DataSpeed.nl. If you still haven't received any login information you  should immediately contact the helpdesk.

Up

  2. How can I upload my site?
at kan op twee manieren; via een FTP client, of indien u Microsoft Frontpage heeft via de
    Frontpage extensies.

Up

  3. What is an FTP client?
This is a program that contacts the server. These programs generally work like a file
manager. For the settings you can read the welcome email you received that contains your login information.

Up

  4. Where can I get such a FTP program?
These programs are often found in shareware or freeware (free) versions on e.g. www.tucows.com or
    www.download.com. Good programs are SW_FTP and Cute-FTP.

Up

  5. What does "connection refused" mean?
Probably, you are using the wrong login or password, check this by logging onto the control panel. A local firewall can also block the connection, turn it off or open gate 21.

Up

  6. I have uploaded my site but can't see it.
Make sure the homepage of your site is called index.html or index.htm (all letters in lowercase!!).
You are to upload your files in the directory /home/<login naam>/public_html/

Up

  7. I get timed-out during uploading
Make sure that passive transfers are shut down in your FTP program. A bad connection to the
internet can also be the cause.

Up

          E-mail
  1. What is my email address?
By default, your account is set so that all mail to your domain enters on the email address
info@<your_site_name.coml>. You have received the login and password combination in your
welcome email. You can generate new email addresses in the control panel and change passwords.

Up

  2. What is a pop3-client?
With this we mean the regular email programs like Outlook etc, which bring the mail from the server
    to your computer.

Up

  3. I have Outlook on my computer by default, can I use it?
Yes, you can. However, Outlook is sensitive to viruses, if you use em-mail in a corporate manner we recommend to install a less sensitive client like Eudora or Pegasus (free). Such programs can be
    found on www.tucows.com or www.download.com

Up

  4. How can I change my email address?
By default, all email targeted to your domain enters on info@<your_site_name.nl> so everything before the @ you will receive without having to generate new aliases in the control panel.
However, if you want a modest mailbox (1 for sales, 1 for administration, etc) you can generate a
new user in the control panel. You give this user a name and a password. In the alias field of this
user you can generate aliases (that’s the name of the part of an adderss before the @) that arrive
via that account. This user can get his mail the same way as the user on the main account, but uses his own login name and password while signing into the email program.

          MySQL / Databases
  1. Where do I find my MySQL data?
You receive the login information at your login information, if you have lost the data then email us
with reference to your name and webdomain.

Up

  2. What is the location of MySQL on the server?
You enter as location of your database host ; localhost

Up

  3. How can I edit my database?
You can do it via PhPmyadmin. PHP myadmin is accessed via your control panel Cpanel

Up

          Frontpage
  1. What are Frontpage extensions?
Frontpage extensions are used by the html editor Microsoft Frontpage. They allow this program to upload the website without your interference, and that Frontpage scripts are supported on the server.

Up

  2. Do I need the extensions?
Only if you use MS Frontpage and want to upload via Frontpage.

Up

  3. While uploading, I get the message that the extensions have not been installed.
This is what Fronpage says at all errors in your website. 1) Have you requested to have the
frontpage extensions turned on? If not, send us an email. 2) are the extensions operational, but do you still get the message then there is a big chance a path of a script on your page is not correct. Generally, a path points towards a local directory on your harddisk.

Up

  4. I have uploaded my site via Frontpage but my mailform/visitors teller/search script
says that the extensions have not been enabled

Frontpage gives this message as soon as something is wrong, since you have uploaded your site via the extensions you can be sure they work, there is probably something else that is wrong in your
page. A common mistake is that a path points to a folder on your harddisk (that does not exist on
the server), so Frontpage can not find the files.

Up

  5. I have uploaded my site yesterday and already it does not work anymore.
Frontpage extensions are beautiful as long as everything works, but it takes very little to cause
mayhem. (like an interrupted upload session). Try to upload the files that give the error and remove the old files.

Up

  6. Can I build my site in Frontpage and upload it with an FTP Program?
This is possible, but we advise you only do this if you know what you’re doing. If you want to upload with FTP and wish to use the extensions (for FP scripts etc) you also have to upload all files that Frontpage has created on your harddisk in directories like –vti etc. If you only construct in Frontpage and don’t use the extensions (you can also build in regular cgi or php scripts) then shut down the extensions on your site. This saves about 6 MB!

Up

          Scripts
  1. What is a script and how can I use it?
A script is a program which adds functionality to your website, Like a visitor teller, or a feedback
    form, a chatbox etc.

Up

  2. I using scripts difficult?
It is not difficult if you are willing to make some effort and somewhat learn the script language. We recommend to beginners not to work with scripts but first learn some basic
functions in html before you start applying scripts. You should always access the readme files from
the author of the script and perhaps his/her website.

Up

  3. Where do I find such a (plug and play) script?
Thousands of free scripts can be downloaded from the internet, for Perl scripts look on:
http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/, also http://www.hotscripts.com is one of
the largest script resources online (php, perl and cgi)

Up

  4. What is the path to Sendmail on the Server?
The path to sendmail is: /usr/sbin/sendmail

Up

  5. What is the path to Perl on the server?
The path to perl is: /usr/bin/perl

Up

  6. Where do I find more (general) information about the usage of scripts?
We direct you to the general pages of the relevant script at http://www.scriptsearch.com/ ; http://www.hotscripts.com .

Up

  7. I get the error message: Forbidden you don't have access to etc.
The cause is often wrong file permissions. You can change those with the chmod 755 command. Generally, your ftp program will have an option for this (file properties or read, write, owner
permission). Scripts must be uploaded in ASCII mode!! Always read the documentation with scripts!

Up

  8. I get the error message: Scripts does not have same GID
You are probably using Microsoft Frontpage, you can use the internal script functions of Frontpage.

Up

  9. I just don't get it...
Open the script with a text editor like notepad, usually there are clues in the script and variables
    that have to be set.

Up

  10. General tips for working with scripts.
CCGI, PHP scripts are very useful tools. But if one small error is made during installation
they won’t work. So you need to work very concisely. To see whether a flaw is in the script or in
your html page you can hail your script directly in your browser. So www.sitename.nl/cgi-bin/scriptname.cgi If you get a notification from the script itself the script will be properly installed. If you get an error message from the server, there is something wrong with the script. Make sure the script is uploaded in ASCI mode or it will not work. Make sure the script and the directory that
contains it have permission 755 (you can do this in your ftp program with the function chmod). Open the script in an asci editor like notepad and see if everything is set properly. Access the site of the author. Check everything for the fifth time…

          Servers
  1. Where are your servers?
Our servers are in the US.

Up

  2. What are your server configurations?
    Hardware is Intel Pentium Processors 1.3 to 2.8Ghz, a minimum of 1GB RAM, 60-220GB Hard Drives, 256k OBC - 1330MHz FSB & 1012 FSB

Up

  3. What sofware is installed on the servers?
Since our software configuration is updated regularly and therefore changes, we advise you for a
precise description to contact us at support@dataspeed-hosting.com

Up

  4. Are your servers sufficiently secured?
Our servers only “listen” to gates that are necessary for providing the service. A firewall makes sure that all other traffic is stopped. Additionally, 24 hours per day and 7 days per week, there is
someone present at the server park who can intervene during a hack/DOS attack.

Up

  5. What do I have to do to keep everything "safe"?
You can also contribute to the security of our servers by making sure your account is safe.
    Be mindful of the following:
1.Use safe passwords, preferably a combination of letters and digits.
2.Never let your password lie around, written on a post-it
3.In case of doubt:instantly change your password
4.Don’t leave behind unused Perl scripts on your website
5.Never place files containing passwords in directories that everyone can approach

          Statistics
  1. Which program do you use to display the statistics, and what can I see with that?
Within the control panel you will find an extensive statistics program. You can, among other things, look at the following: How many people have been there in a given period,
which pages did they view, how long did they stay, where do they come from, from which page do
they come, with which search engine did they find your page, what headwords did they use in the search engine.

Up

          SSL
  1. What is SSL ?
SSL is a security, that can be used for example with credit card payments vie the internet.
DataSpeed offers the possibility to host your HTTPS website. This means that all internet communication between the website and your visitors will be encoded by an SSL certificate. This is important when sensitive information like credit card data are sent via your website. This means
those pages will be available at an address like http://secure.yourdomainname.com

Up

  2. What are the costs that are tied to the usage of SSL?
Installing SSL will cost you nothing, but you have to buy a SSL certificate, you can do this through us.

Up

  3. How much does a SSL certificate cost?
With us, you can buy a SSL certificate for 200 Euro exl. VAT

          Site promotion
  1. How do I get my site in the search engines?
This can only be done properly one way: manually. Each search engine has a link where you can add your site (submit ssite). Programs that add your site to ten thousand search engines at once,
usually result in a large amount of spam.

Up

  2. What are meta-tags?
Meta-tags are placed in your page to make sure your site becomes indexable for search engines. Examples of metatags are keywords, title, description etc. usually you can add them in your html editor.

Up

  3. Can I have my site promoted by a professional company?
Yes, one of these companies is traffic4you (http://www.traffic4you.nl) , but there are many others
you can find by going to promotie.pagina.nl or by typing a search command in one of the many
search engines (tip: look on www.google.com)

          General information
  1. Virus fight
Your incoming and outgoing mail is automatically scanned on the server for the latest viruses. However, it is wise not to assume you are completely safe. Some general tips to prevent infection:
Do not open attachments that are meant to be funny (you know those film clips, pictures etc) you receive from friends, even if they are scanned. Use an email program that is safer than Outlook, for which 90% of the viruses are written.
Turn off all script options of your email program, if possible don’t use html email, it may look nice
with all the colors but is generally not really functional for a letter. Install a so-called firewall on your computer. And once every so often, use an up-to-dat-virus scanner on your computer. It is
completely useless to scan with an obsolete scanner, so make sure you are always up to date. Also, don’t open files or emails with 2 extensions, like openme.vrl.exe / wowreadthis.isl.exe etc..

Up

  2. A Smooth site
Make sure your pages are not too big. The servers and the links of the servers may be lightning
fast. The link of your visitors may not be. 100 Kb per page as maximum is generally considered acceptable. Ofcourse, you can make a bigger intro if you also provide the option to skip it since
many 56k modem users are downloading these large files with much agitation.

Up

  3. Password security
If you want to secure a directory with a password, you can do this in our control panel.

Up

  4. I can't reach my site so the server is down
The chance that the server is down, is minimal. The chance that something else is the matter, is
much bigger. First, check on the client page whether there is maintenance scheduled for your server, all maintenance is reported. If this is not the case, mail us.
